Get to Know the Lionfish! 🐠
These striking fish are easily recognized by their dramatic, venomous spines and banded appearance. Their venomous spines provide a powerful, year-round defense mechanism against most potential predators.
Their unique hunting technique involves using their large pectoral fins to corner and trap prey before swallowing it whole, making them highly effective predators in diverse reef structures.
Known for thriving in various marine habitats as they can adapt to different temperatures, depths & salinity and have a generalist diet, consuming a large variety of small fish, crabs, and shrimp. This means they are not dependent on a single prey source and can quickly switch their diet based on what is available in a new habitat.
A truly unique inhabitant of the ocean!

Ningaloo Reef is a Critical Habitat for Green Sea Turtles. 🐢
Sea turtles have been swimming Earth`s oceans for over 100 million years, making them contemporaries of the dinosaurs!
The waters and beaches of Ningaloo are globally significant for this species. This area provides crucial nesting beaches and rich feeding grounds—primarily seagrass beds—for adult turtles.
The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is one of the largest sea turtle species and, although we are lucky enough to see many of them on Ningaloo, they are listed as Endangered globally.
Unlike many reptiles, these turtles are largely herbivorous as adults, feasting mainly on seagrass and algae, which gives their fat its greenish colour (hence the name!).
A sea turtle`s shell, or carapace, is an integral part of its skeleton, composed of about 50 bones fused together. They cannot leave their shells.

🌀 MANTA MAGIC 🌀
Every September, as the full moon lights up the Ningaloo, something truly magical happens beneath the surface… ✨
It’s manta mating season — when these graceful giants gather in incredible numbers and form “mating chains”, a rare courtship ritual where multiple males follow a single female in a hypnotic underwater dance 💃🐋 The males twist, tumble and spiral behind her, each showing off their strength and agility — nature’s ballet at its finest!
This phenomenon only happens a few times a year, and witnessing it in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience 💙 Seeing dozens of mantas glide, loop and twirl through the turquoise waters of Ningaloo Reef is something you’ll never forget.
Join us aboard Sail Ningaloo during the September full moon for your chance to witness this natural wonder up close — where every day on the reef feels like magic 🪸🌊

🪸 Did you know coral is alive?
It’s not a plant or a rock — it’s made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps! Each polyp builds a little limestone home, and together they form the reef. Inside their tissues live microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which give coral its vibrant colour 🌈 and energy from sunlight — a perfect ocean partnership.
Over centuries, these coral colonies build the breathtaking Ningaloo Reef — one of the largest and healthiest fringing reefs in the world, home to over 250 species of coral and 500+ species of fish! 🐠💙
And if you’ve dived Blue Maze / Coral Castles with us, you’ll know why National Geographic rated it one of the Top 10 snorkel & dive sites in the world 🤿✨ — coral towers, swim-throughs and walls teeming with life.
Every coral, every polyp, plays a role in keeping this reef alive — so remember to float, not stand, and use reef-safe sunscreen 🌞 Together, we can help protect this living wonder for generations to come.

Our 3-night Ningaloo adventure departing October 7th was dominated by one absolutely epic highlight: mantas! We witnessed an unforgettable underwater spectacle, starting with the graceful mantas dancing a waltz that quickly intensified into a dramatic frenzy of a mating chain—a truly rare and thrilling sight.
This extraordinary event was complemented by Ningaloo’s staple characters: sleek reef sharks, camouflaged wobbegongs, peaceful turtles, and a colourful cast of fish including convict surgeonfish, monocle bream, angelfish, butterflyfish, and trevally. We also spotted a curious octopus, and much more! This getaway was a condensed dose of pure Ningaloo magic.

Our 5-night Ningaloo escape departing October 2nd was a spectacular showcase of reef life!
We explored vibrant sites teeming with marine diversity, encountering countless stingrays gliding across the sand. The shark life was strong, even coming eye to eye with a sleek tawny nurse shark in the shallows. The reef pulsed with schooling fish like massive buffalo bream and speedy trevally, while the bottom held fascinating creatures like catfish, spikey lionfish, and secretive moray eels.
Our night dive delivered a truly special moment: a vibrant Spanish Dancer showed off its dramatic, flamenco-like moves in the darkness.
The absolute highlight of the entire trip was the truly magical experience of swimming along with four majestic mantas at once! It was a breathtaking, unforgettable moment shared by all.
